As a member of the Rollin 60s Crips, I know firsthand what a life of gang violence looks like. I didn’t grow up with a lot of money or opportunities, so joining the gang seemed like a way out. But it only led to a life of violence and heartache.
The Lure of Gang Life: My Start with the Rollin 60s Crips
It started when I was 16. I was walking home from school when a group of guys approached me. They asked me if I wanted to make some money selling drugs. It seemed like an easy way to make some cash, so I joined in.
Soon, I was fully immersed in the gang lifestyle. I was initiated into the Rollin 60s Crips and became a full-fledged member of the gang. It felt empowering to know that I had a group of guys who had my back, but that power came at a steep cost.
The Harsh Reality: Violence, Loss, and the Search for Power
I’ve witnessed countless acts of violence and even became a perpetrator myself. I was involved in a drive-by shooting that killed an innocent bystander. I can still hear their family’s cries of grief echoing in my head.
As the years went on, I realized that the gang was all I had. It became my family, and I felt like I couldn’t leave even if I wanted to. But eventually, I knew I had to get out.
Breaking Free: Choosing Education and a Path to Redemption
I started building a different life for myself. I enrolled in community college and got a job. It wasn’t easy, and I had to constantly watch my back, but I knew it was worth it.
Now, as a former gang member, I have a message for the youth who are at risk of joining a gang. Gang life is not the answer. It’s a vicious cycle of violence that you won’t be able to escape from easily. Don’t make the same mistakes I did, because the consequences are severe and long-lasting.
Find other ways to make your mark on the world and to make a positive impact. Don’t let the allure of a gang cloud your judgment and lead you down a path you’ll regret. There are mentors and organizations out there that can help guide you towards a brighter future.
In conclusion, I urge the youth to choose a different path than the gangs. Don’t make the same mistakes I did. Together, we can change the cycle of violence.
