Coup Plot Disrupted in Burkina Faso
According to Communication Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo, the coup plotters planned to hamper the country’s restoration process. The intelligence gathered showed that the coup plotters intended to act on January 14, 2024, but intelligence agencies disrupted the plan before it could be executed
The arrested individuals allegedly aimed to foment a mutiny, followed by violent interventions by external commandos, which would have brought Burkina Faso into retrogression. Civil society organizations allegedly acquiesced to their cause, and financial resources were in the process of transfer from outside.
Not an Isolated Attempt
The Burkina Faso security forces have recently registered several cases of abductions. Arrests of high-profile personalities, including former Chief of Staff of the gendarmerie Lieutenant-Colonel Évrard Somda. The authorities must, amid this context, tread cautiously around old vices aiming to destabilize and maintain peace and stability.
Moving Forward
Burkina Faso should sustain vigilance against potential street violence, terrorism, and abductions. The region must remain undeterred against escalating crises that could stall its socioeconomic gains.
